Scrupulousness

We intend Scrupulousness as the Latin ‘diligentia’ and the Greek ‘akribeia’.

We people of Sokratiko value very much this quality. In fact, attentive CARE for details is a sign of philosophical distinction. And philosophy is itself an all out scrupulous analysis of “reality”. Therefore, we preach a meticulous behaviour, rejecting shallowness, distraction and superficiality.

SCRUPULOUSNESS is a daily practice. Indeed, real philosopher are scrupulous every day, in every situation. And in usual routines as well. Hence, eating, drinking and sleeping are also activities to regard with consciousness.

But, unfortunately, the opposite takes place. How many times – having a meal (or cooking a meal) – we talk to other people, we think about something else, we watch tv, we check mobile phones? At the end, we do not even remember the food we ate (or cooked). Instead, it is crucial to be aware of any bite, any crumble, taste, color, savour.

We intend Scrupulousness as the Latin 'diligentia' and the Greek 'akribeia'.

We intend Scrupulousness as the Latin ‘diligentia’ and the Greek ‘akribeia’. Here is emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus (Marcus Aurelius) Meditations 2, 5. “Concentrate every minute like a Roman—like a man—on doing what’s in front of you with precise and genuine seriousness, tenderly, willingly, justice. And on freeing yourself from all other distractions. Yes, you can—if you do everything as if it were the last thing you were doing in your life. Stop being aimless, stop letting your emotions override what your mind tells you, stop being hypocritical, self-centered, irritable. You see how few things you have to do to live a satisfying and reverent life? If you can manage this, that’s all even the gods can ask of you“.

This is Sokratiko’s way to interpret the notion of SCRUPULOUSNESS. Please continue to browse our list of philosophical TOPICS by clicking on the other entries of our list as well.
