(“Vertigo” is directed by sir Alfred Hitchcock)
directed by sir Alfred Hitchcock (1958) – In this movie masterpiece the American actress Kim Novak plays a double role: Madeleine Elster/Judy Barton. Therefore it is not unreasonable for her to say “only one is a wanderer; two together are always going somewhere”. But here such a declaration is for us a reminder of a philosophical dilemma. Actually it is an existential problem as well. Thus the choice is between solitude and FREEDOM. In other words companionship or reciprocal RESPONSIBILITY? Well we like the idea of a life rich of solitary moments. Because we need occasions to feel completely free and to unleash our mind. But we also like a life in which intercourses are frequent with other minds and souls. Because the human being is a social animal. Well, an acceptable point of equilibrium is the philosophical answer to this problem. Although we all know how difficult is to reach that point. In fact, all the unbalanced positions cover a lot of space in the wide range of possibilities. Instead the point of equilibrium (not every point but that one) is only a single dot in the same range. Hence the pains in detecting where it is and how to reach it. The philosophical work on oneself is also the work to learn how to detect that point. Also how to reach it and how to maintain it long enough. Sometimes such a job is feasible but sometimes it proves quite impervious. After all philosophy is difficult most of the times.
