directed by Andrew Niccol (1997) – This world is a media world, a video world, a television world. Indeed it is not surprising how much a visual world like ours be dominated by the “values” of physical attributes. In fact this is a world made for good-looking people. Just think about the number of advertising campaign promoting gymns, diet products, clothing. Needless to say, philosophy, in general, despises the false standards of appearance and physical merits. Instead philosophy pays attention to less noticeable qualities like DIGNITY, WISDOM and CARE (just to mention a few).

GONE GIRL
directed by David Fincher (2014) – Some people float in an interminable flow of lies. Falsehood and deception are so ordinary to them that they lie even when there is no need for them to do it. Actually they do not realize that falseness is a structural distorsion of natural behaviour. Thus fabrication has anthropological consequences on the liers because it changes their nature. That is why insincerity is against all philosophical principles. In particular “to lie” is in obvious contrast with OUTSPOKENNESS and TRUTHFULNESS.
GRAN TORINO
directed by Clint Eastwood (2008) – RIGHTEOUSNESS and the adherence to important values do not make a courageous man into a philosopher. OPEN-MINDEDNESS is important as well as ACCEPTANCE, SOUL-SEARCHING and AFFECTION. Then we are talking of many qualities. Indeed a difficult path towards a real philosophical life. But the good news is that we can embrace philosophy even in our oldest age. Keeping in mind that “experience” might sometime facilitate and sometime hinder our best efforts.
GRAVITY
directed by Alfonso Cuaron (2013) – What kind of people are more likely to survive (psychologically even more than physically) in the outer space? What qualities need people who must fight, in solitude, against all kinds of menaces and disgraceful events? Indeed FORTITUDE and SELF-CONTROL are pivotal to face such troublesome tests. But a proper TRAINING is equally indispensable. And here, of course, the cosmic space could be a metaphor of several circumstances of our life on Earth.
GUILAI (COMING HOME)
directed by Zhang Yimou (2014) – Many years in a Chinese labor camp. Then, upon finally coming back home, a wife suffering from amnesia. She does not recognize him as her husband because of many a sexual assault suffered when he was away. If it were not enough, the daughter betrays him. In fact the police arrests the unfortunate man when his daughter reveals where to catch him. Despite such a miserable life, Lu Yanshi keeps an admirable DIGNITY showing the qualities of ACCEPTANCE, AFFECTION, CARE and RESPECT.
